STORYTELLING FESTIVAL COMING TO SALEM JUNE 10

The First Annual Blue Ridge Storytelling Festival will be held June 10 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at Green Hill Park in Salem.

The event, sponsored by the Roanoke County Parks and Recreation Department, is dedicated to the late Darrell Shell, who was committed to bringing such a festival to the Roanoke Valley.

A number of featured tellers, as well as local and student storytellers, will perform.

Don McConnell, of Tennessee, who has performed across the country, will offer his ``Old Time Medicine Show.''

David Massengill, of New York, combines his storytelling skills with his musical performances. In 1994, he was a featured teller at the National Storytelling Festival.

Kathy Pierce, of New Jersey, has a repertoire of traditional, literary and original tales enhanced by poetry and music.

Gwynn Ramsey, a master storyteller from Lynchburg, will spin his ``tall tales,'' told in Southern Appalachian Mountain dialect.

The festival will also include a craft show, food and family activities.
