The town offices in Blacksburg, Christiansburg, Radford and Pulaski, along with Montgomery and Pulaski county offices, will be closed on Monday in observance of Memorial Day.
Garbage collection in Blacksburg and Pulaski will be on regular Monday schedules. Residents and businesses who put out trash on Mondays in Radford and Christiansburg should put it out on Tuesday by 6 a.m. in Radford and by 8 a.m. in Christiansburg. Tuesday collection in those towns will include both Monday and Tuesday customers.
Live broadcast
CHRISTIANSBURG - Kool Country radio 100.7 FM and 990 AM are planning to broadcast live at Hokie Honda Mitsubishi in Blacksburg on Saturday 10 a.m.-1 p.m. and on Monday 11 a.m.-2 p.m. From 1 to 2 p.m. on Saturday, radio host Levi Garrett will be live at the community wellness fair at Margaret Beeks Elementary School, 709 Airport Road, Blacksburg.
The Cuzin' Nelson show has returned to a 9-10 a.m. slot on Sunday morning on AM radio. He will be hosting a southern gospel show each week.
Rules and an application for the True Value Jimmy Dean Country Showdown can be picked up at the radio station at 485 Tower Road. The grand prize for an aspiring country musician is $50,000 and a recording contract. Kool Country will be hosting the showdown on June 25.
Athletic drive
RADFORD - The Radford University Athletic Association kicked off its annual fund drive with a luncheon and a $300,000 goal. California Angels pitcher Phil Leftwich, who played baseball at Radford from 1988 to 1990, spoke about how financial aid help him achieve goals.
The association provides financial support for young student athletes and administers the Highlander athletic program. Last year, 170 student athletes at the university received scholarships. For more information, call 831-5108.
Summer reading
RADFORD - The summer reading program at Radford Public Library will begin on June 10. Three-year-olds through rising seventh graders are encouraged to participate.
This year's theme is "Readers of the Roundtable," and there will be books available for all levels of readers on castles, dragons and other medieval subjects. Books and certificates will be awarded to younger children who read at least 10 books and to older children who read at leave five longer books.

Library volunteers
Youths are being solicited to participate in library volunteer programs over the summer. The Teen Volunteer Program at Montgomery-Floyd Regional Library gives young adults age 13 and up an opportunity to learn about the library and assist with summer children's programs. Applications are available at the branch libraries and bookmobiles.
Radford Public Library is seeking middle school aged youth to help register summer reading participants and assist with craft projects. Volunteers will be treated to a pizza party at the conclusion of the program. Anyone interested should sign up by June 7.
Y Thrift Shop
BLACKSBURG - Jean White, assistant director of the Virginia Tech YMCA Thrift Shop, is asking anyone moving or spring cleaning to remember that the store accepts donations of good used clothing, household items, linens, paperback books, toys, sports equipment and furniture. Proceeds from sales support YMCA programs throughout the county like tutoring children and home repair for low income residents.
Donation hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. at the new location in Gables Shopping Center, 1336 S. Main St. For more information, call 231-6860.
