VIRGINIA BAPTIST CHILDREN'S HOME AND FAMILY SERVICES in Salem received more than $23,000 from a May 13 walk. The money will be used to expand services of the home, including more facilities for mentally retarded adults.
VIRGINIA BAPTIST NURSING FELLOWSHIP has scheduled an organizational meeting for a Roanoke Valley chapter tonight at 7:30 in Room 220 of First Baptist Church in downtown Roanoke. The meeting is open to all active, inactive and retired health care professionals. The group, which is sponsored by the Southern Baptist Woman's Missionary Union of Virginia, exists for fellowship and training of medical personnel for disaster assistance. A MEMORIAL DAY LITURGY will begin at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Andrew's Catholic cemetery, 3601 Salem Turnpike N.W. The service will replace the usual Mass at the church. The cemetery has recently been refurbished.
THE REV. STEVEN VAN HOUTEN, pastor of Cloverdale Church of the Brethren for the past 12 years, will leave the pastorate Aug. 1 to become minister of Springfield Church of the Brethren near Akron, Ohio. Van Houten has been at the church since his graduation from Bethany Theological Seminary.
DARLENE CALDWELL, a member of Fairview United Methodist Church, is one of a team of 14 Virginians who will leave Saturday for a work mission in Kingston, Jamaica. The medical team will operate a clinic to treat eyes as well as providing general care and will take $10,000 worth of supplies donated by United Methodist church members.
NEW GRACE BAPTIST CHURCH, 1214 Peters Creek Road N.W, will sponsor a Friends Day program Sunday beginning at 11 a.m. It will include music by the Fellowship Trio and lunch.
NORTHMINSTER PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, a neighbor of Huff Lane Elementary School, has developed a ministry in which 15 fourth- and fifth-graders attend an after-school enrichment program each Thursday afternoon.
