CHAMBER HONORS PAINT-ROLLER MAKER

Roanoke businessman Hank Stecker, who calls himself the nation's largest producer of sheepskin paint rollers, was named the area's small-business person of the year Wednesday.

The award from the Roanoke Regional Chamber of Commerce enables Stecker, owner of Hansteck Corp. in Roanoke County, to compete for the state title later this year.

The chamber issued awards to representatives of four other Roanoke-area businesses.

Richard Newcomb, president of Newcomb Electric Co., won the small-business award in construction services. The wholesale or retail small-business award went to Lee Hartman Jr. and Bob Hartman of Lee Hartman & Sons, a sound-equipment company.

The service award went to Roger Jefferson, president of Dominion Graphic Services. In a category for companies with 10 or fewer employees, the winner was Al Williamson, president of Sign Design.
