IN SERVICE

PFC. ELIZABETH EBY STEFFENSEN of Roanoke was given the honorary rank of six-star general by Korean civic leaders during the United Service Organizations Council of Korea's 24th annual Six-Star Salute.

Civic leaders used the occasion to express their country's gratitude to Steffensen, who repairs missiles at Camp Hovey, Korea, and more than 100 other enlisted personnel from the United States, Korea and the United Nations Command serving throughout South Korea.

AIRMAN BRIAN C. STONEBURNER recently graduated from the airman leadership school at Incirlik Air Base, Adana, Turkey. Stoneburner is a 1990 graduate of Patrick Henry High School.

SPC. ANTHONY W. SOWDER, son of Wister C. and Lee A. Sowder of Roanoke, has earned the Army Achievement Medal for meritorious service, acts of courage or other outstanding accomplishments. He is a mechanic and a 1988 graduate of Cave Spring High School.

PVT. PAUL J. SCAFFIDI, son of Paul Scaffidi Sr. of Roanoke and Vicki L. Scaffidi of Horseheads, N.Y., recently completed basic training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

SPEC. MICHAEL L. YOUNG of Roanoke has been promoted to sergeant in the Army Reserves. Young is a graduate of Patrick Henry High School and is serving at Fort Pickett in Blackstone.

AIRMAN 1ST CLASS LEONARD W. DISHNER, son of Barry W. and Sharon H. Dishner of Roanoke, has graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. He is a 1994 graduate of Patrick Henry High School.

STAFF SGT. RANDOLPH P. KENT III, son of Anita S. Weikel of Troutville, has been named noncommissioned officer of the quarter at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in Goldsboro, N.C.

Selection is based on the individual's exemplary duty performance, job knowledge, leadership qualities, significant self-improvement and other accomplishments.

Kent, a weapons load crew chief, is a 1986 graduate of Lord Botetourt High School and earned an associate's degree in 1995 from the Community College of the Air Force.
