OFFICER CLEARED IN SHOOTING OF POLICE CHIEF

A former Grottoes police officer was cleared Friday in the shooting of Grottoes Police Chief Charles Lawhorne.

A. David Broad, 41, was cleared in Rockingham County General District Court of a misdemeanor count of reckless handling of a firearm. He was charged after shooting Lawhorne once in the chest Feb. 17 with a 9 mm pistol at Lawhorne's home.

Broad subsequently was fired by Town Council. Lawhorne has recovered.

Commonwealth's Attorney Douglas T. Stark has said Broad and Lawhorne were playing quick-draw with unloaded weapons when Broad loaded his weapon and fired. Lawhorne disputed that terminology, saying he was instructing Broad on how to draw his sidearm.
