APCO EXECUTIVE TO RETIRE

THOMAS A. ROTENBERRY, head of Appalachian Power Co.'s West Virginia operations, will retire Aug. 1. Rotenberry began his career with the electric utility in Roanoke in 1962. He became president and chief operating officer of Kingsport Power Co. in Tennessee in 1988 and became president of Apco in Charleston in 1992.

Rotenberry will be replaced by DANA E. WALDO, president and chief operating officer of Wheeling Power Co.

Apco, Wheeling Power and Kingsport Power are all subsidiaries of American Electric Power Inc. of Columbus, Ohio.

BANKING

KAY VARNEY has joined Valley Bank in Roanoke as assistant vice president and branch manager of its downtown office. Varney has more than eight years of experience with First Virginia Bank-Southwest and had been manager of First Virginia's downtown office since 1990.

COLLEGES

C.R. "ANDY" McCULLAR of Bristol, president and chief executive officer of Charter Federal Savings Bank, has been named to Emory & Henry College's board of visitors. The 30-year banking veteran formerly was an assistant regional executive officer of Dominion Bankshares Corp. in Roanoke.

GOVERNMENT

Del. VICTOR THOMAS, D-Roanoke, has been appointed to the Virginia Small Business Commission, which was created this year by the General Assembly to ensure that the concerns of small businesses be heard by the legislature. Thomas was vice chairman of the subcommittee that recommended the formation of the commission.

INSURANCE

KATHLEEN MARIE KRONAU has been named associate counsel-law division at Shenandoah Life Insurance Co. in Roanoke. Kronau previously was an assistant city attorney for Roanoke and worked in the law department at Norfolk Southern Corp.

The Insurance Women's Association of Roanoke, the local chapter of the National Association of Insurance Women, has elected officers for 1995-1996: FREDA RAMEY, Acordia of Virginia, president; REBECCA GUILLIAMS, Chas. Lunsford Sons & Associates, first vice president; DONNA AMOS, State Farm Insurance, second vice president; PAMELA EVANS, Thomas B. Rutherfoord Inc., treasurer; and FRANCES GARRETT, Chas. Lunsford Sons & Associates, secretary. JOYCE JOHNSON, Thomas B. Rutherfoord Inc., is immediate past president.

MARKETING

CHAD YOUNG of Robertson Marketing Group in Salem has been promoted to account executive. He will have sales and marketing responsibilities for clients in Southwest Virginia. STEPHANIE POE has joined the staff as an account manager.

NONPROFITS

The Rev. Dr. ROBERT T. COPENHAVER and T. HENRY HALE JR. have been elected to the board of directors of the United Way of Roanoke Valley. Copenhaver, rector at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Salem, is also first vice president of the Boys' Home of Covington. Hale, who is employed at Yokohama Tire Co., is the first graduate of United Way's minority leadership enhancement program to join the board of directors.

ORGANIZATIONS

BETTY MOORMAN, governor and past president of the Roanoke Valley Legal Secretaries Association, was named "Virginia's Member of the Year" for 1995 at the state convention. Moorman works for the general practice law firm of Coulter & Coulter in Roanoke.

Pilot International-Roanoke, a professional women's club, has elected new officers: JEANETTE NOELL, Roanoke City Schools, president; SHIRLEY BROWN, Coronet Realty Co., president-elect; ELEANOR TURNER, Discount Wallpaper & Floor Covering, vice president; DEEANNA SMITH, Discount Wallpaper & Floor Covering, treasurer; SHARON CORNTHWAIT, recording secretary; and DORIS CARPER, retired, Roanoke Memorial Hospital, corresponding secretary.
