Three local students were recognized with awards and scholarships. Hsuei-Ling Yu of Radford, received a departmental award for economics; Kelly F. Nicely of Dublin, received a departmental award for finance and Jennifer C. Ferguson received a departmental scholarship in accounting.
\ Christiansburg resident Kim Mattox received the O'Dell Smith Leadership award from Lees-McRae College, Banner Elk, N.C. The award recognizes students who demonstrate leadership and service to the college. Mattox also received the board of trustees' Leadership Scholarship, given annually to rising juniors and seniors. She is the daughter of James and Nancy Mattox.
Radford resident Christopher A. Learn was selected as the 1995 Outstanding Senior for the College of Arts and Sciences at Virginia Tech. Learn graduated summa cum laude with a 3.99 grade-point average, the highest in the College of Arts and Sciences. He received a degree in biology with a minor in chemistry. He was a member of the Mortar Board and Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society.
Learn will study immunology on a full fellowship at Bowman Gray Medical School at Wake Forest University. He is a recipient of a $15,000 grant from the National Science Foundation.
At Virginia Tech, Learn was service chairman of the German Club, student representative on the Student-Service Learning Council and a YMCA project leader.
Learn graduated in 1991 from Radford High School, where he was the most outstanding male student. He is the son of Suzanne Learn and the late Dr. William Learn of Radford.
\ Thomas R. Stephenson of Blacksburg won the Outstanding Graduate Student Award from the Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources at the University of Idaho. Stephenson has helped advance the use of ultrasound technology on wildlife through his work measuring the body fat of moose.
\ Matthew Hassler of Blacksburg is one of 16 Radford University students selected for a Presidential Youth Service Award. A junior majoring in social work, Hassler volunteers at the Women's Resource Center in Radford.
The award is administered by the White House Office of National Service and the Corporation for National and Community Service. It recognizes young people who participate in community service activities that address serious social problems.
\ Three students were honored at Emory & Henry College's recent awards convocation. Melissa Sumner of Christiansburg received the Adrienne Arow Davis Memorial Scholarship, given to students studying music. She is the daughter of Daniel Sumner and the late Sandra Sumner.
Shawsville resident Brad Dulaney received the Matilda & William Lee Young Fine Arts Scholarship and the Adrienne Arow Davis Memorial Scholarship. The Young scholarship is given to a junior or senior majoring in one of the fine arts. Dulaney is the son of Kathy and Haden Dulaney.
Kelley Ryan of Shawsville received the Eleanor Hutton Scholarship, awarded to a female student majoring in physical education. She is the daughter of Regina and William Ryan.
\ Mary Washington College awarded Heather L. Mullins of Blacksburg the Henry W. Hewetson Economics Award for academic excellence and service to the economics department during her senior year.
\ Jimmy W. Caldwell of Christiansburg won first place in the automotive service technology division at the state Vocational Industrial Clubs of America competition at Virginia Beach. Brad Burton of Radford placed second in the job interview competition at the state level.
A recent graduate of New River Valley Community College, Caldwell will travel to Kansas City this summer to compete for national awards. Caldwell works at Haley Toyota in Roanoke.
\ Several students received medical assisting pins from the National Business College. The pins recognize students for their accomplishments as 1995 graduates.
They are: Sonna Gates, Keith Haskins, Vanessa Holman, Phyllis Hudson, Susan Light and Jean Trump of Christiansburg; Ella Jane Handy and Susan Long of Dublin; Charlotte Huff of Radford; and Pamela Via of Blacksburg.
National's two-year medical assisting degree is the only American Medical Association-accredited program in Virginia and West Virginia.
