In the past, a first-grade student and a senior in high school could have been riding the same school bus. With the new system, students at different grade levels can make one trip straight to their school and then home again in the afternoons.
Superintendent Leonard Gereau says the School Board hopes separate busing will create more efficiency.
``There is too much down time waiting for students to switch buses in the mornings and the afternoons,'' he said. ``We want to be able to have all elementary students begin school at 8:30 and get out at 3.''
Throughout the summer, Franklin County parents will be informed of the new bus schedules, including when and where their children will be picked up and what time they will get to school each morning and arrive home in the afternoons. The new schedule will begin in the fall.
``Hopefully, we will be able to account for every child at any given time,'' Gereau said.
The School Board also voted to spend $176,182 on modular technology labs at Benjamin Franklin Middle School. The labs, which should be ready in September, will include 19 modules that cover electronic aeronautics, hydraulics and computer-assisted drafting, Gereau said.
