BRILL RECEIVES PRESTIGIOUS WADE AWARD

Bill Brill, a columnist for the Durham Herald-Sun and Basketball America and former sports editor of the Roanoke Times and World-News, will receive the 1995 Jake Wade Award.

Brill, a Duke graduate who started at the Times and World-News in 1956 and became sports editor in 1960, left the paper in 1991 for Durham.

He has been a columnist for the Herald-Sun since August 1992 and also writes for the Blue Devil Weekly.

Brill served two terms as president of the National Association of Sportscasters and Sportswriters from 1993-95 and was named the Virginia Sportswriter of the Year in 1991.

The Philadelphia native also served as president of the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (1980-81) and was the first active writer inducted into the USBWA Hall of Fame in 1990.

The Wade Award is presented annually to an individual in the communications field who has made an outstanding contribution to college athletics.
