State 4-H congress
BLACKSBURG - Youngsters from across the state will be at Virginia Tech Monday through Thursday for the annual state 4-H Congress.
The young people will vie for medals in competitions ranging from conservation to money management. More than 400 4-H members are expected to participate in workshops, speaking events, and social and recreational occasions.
Dolf Droge, a radio reporter and 19-year employee of the Agency for International Development, will be the closing speaker.
Occurring at the same time at the university is an electric-energy conference called Oikos, in which youngsters and adults will study community energy issues.
Chamber mixer Wednesdsay
BLACKSBURG - The Greater Blacksburg Chamber of Commerce's June mixer will be Wednesday at the Foxridge Welcome Center at 5:30 p.m.
The event is open to members and guests, and will feature hors d'oeuvres, beer and wine. Admission is free.

July 4 chorus seeking singers
BLACKSBURG - Independence Day is coming, and it can mean only one thing: The town's Celebration Chorus is recruiting singers to participate in a July 4th concert.
The organization is open to all singers of any age, for the sixth annual concert.
Keith Fenton, director of Virginia Tech's Concert Choir and the Meistersingers madrigal ensemble, will direct this year's Celebration Chorus, which will perform with the Blacksburg Community Band. Seth Williamson, radio host for WVTF and music critic for the Roanoke Times & World-News, will narrate the program.
