NEW BUDGET MANDATES A HELPING HAND

Some county organizations will get more money than expected under Pulaski County's 1995-96 budget, as long as they help the county's Office on Youth, which will get less money this year.

The Board of Supervisors on Monday approved the new budget of nearly $17.3 million with a few minor internal changes.

The budget for the Pulaski County Office on Youth was reduced to $36,000, because of an anticipated reduction in state funding and some programming changes.

A contribution to the Literacy Volunteers of America was increased by $1,378, subject to a commitment from the group to help supply the Office on Youth Clothing Closet with donated children's books. The books will go to disadvantaged youths.

A $543 increase to the allocation for New River Community Sentencing will allow a full state funding match for a Victim/Witness Assistance Program, subject to a commitment from the sentencing organization to assist the Office on Youth with its programs and goals. One of those goals is to restore the Draper Mountain Overlook on U.S. 11, which has been closed because of trash problems, through community service work time.

The school fund stayed at more than $26.9 million, despite last month's request by school officials for an additional $500,000. The School Board will now have to do some cutting.

The budget reflects no changes in tax rates.

In other business, the supervisors authorized the application for a $14,000 three-year, no-interest loan to build an 80,000-square foot industrial shell building.

The board also agreed to donate $1,200 toward Pulaski County's age 12 and under basketball team. The team will participate in the national championships in Oklahoma City, Okla., July 7-15.

It will be the second time in three years that Pulaski County has been represented at the national tournament for that age group.

Team members and their parents have raised $12,000 toward the trip through car washes, bake sales, raffles and other activities. The members are Trish Allison, Jamill Boysaw, Heather Burnette, Tiffany Conner, Ashley Graham, Jennifer Hamblin, Micah Hamblin, Lindsey Reed, Jessica Turpin and Shara Wenrich. Mandy Reed is manager.

The supervisors also reviewed a proposed agenda for Thursday night's quarterly joint meeting with Pulaski and Dublin town councils.

The three governing bodies will discuss extending an agreement that has provided for a countywide recreation commission, consider a feasibility study on a countywide police force, discuss the status of cable television ordinances in the three jurisdictions and more.
