As floodwaters receded, officials counted 8 homes as destroyed, 17 suffered major damage and 108 others sustained minor damage. The Red Cross said 50 people were unable to return home.
GLASGOW
At the site of the worst flooding, two of the main roads into town remained closed, although a third - from U.S. 11 - was open.
VESUVIUS-GLASGOW
Mudslides and wash-outs have closed a 25-mile stretch of Norfolk Southern track. Trains on the mainline from Roanoke to Hagerston, Md. are being re-routed through Lynchburg. The Rockbridge County tracks may be reopened this weekend.
SNOW CREEK
Three people were killed early Thursday when their truck crashed into a huge hole in a washed-out road. Virginia 652 remains closed.
MONETA
Seven inches of rain pounded parts of Bedford County Wednesday night, peeling away pavement on Virginia 122. One lane remains closed.
ROANOKE
The Garden City neighborhood cleaned up after flooding that residents said was worse than 1985. One house was badly damaged when the roof shifted, the foundation cracked and the brick facade toppled to the ground. A streambed was littered with TV sets from a damaged television repair store.
SALEM
Rescue workers spent the wee hours of Thursday evacuating Ramey's Mobile Home Park on Lynchburg Turnpike. "They were out late hauling vehicles out with wreckers, trying to keep them from being compltely submerged," Salem Police Lt. R.E. Gray said.
But by morning, the floodwaters were down and only mud caked the streets.
BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY
Mudslides closed 150 feet of the Blue Ridge Parkway on Roanoke Mountain much of the day.
