UNITARIANS PLAN 4TH OF JULY POTLUCK EVENT

A potluck Fourth of July picnic is set for Tuesday at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of the New River Valley on Gladewood Drive in Blacksburg. 552-5273.

The Rev. Alfred Thompson of the Olive Branch Baptist Church in Dinwiddie will visit Scheaffer Memorial Baptist Church Sunday.

MAKING A JOYFUL NOISE

The Singing Echoes from Cleveland, Tenn., will perform at the Merrimac Pentecostal Holiness Church today at 7 p.m. 552-5070.

Second Chance, the Southern Gospel Trio of the Year as selected by the International Country Gospel Music Association, will perform at the House of Worship on Old Robinson Tract Road in Pulaski tonight at 7 and in Bisset Park in Radford on Tuesday at 1:40 p.m.

David and the Giants, a band that has been making Christian music for 18 years and recently released their 16th album, ``Angels Unaware,'' will perform at Christiansburg High School July 21 at 7 p.m.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOLS

Fairlawn Baptist Church will have Vacation Bible School July 8 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. for preschoolers through youths.

Crafts and lunch will be provided, and rides are available. 639-5049.

All ages are welcome to Vacation Bible School at Christiansburg Church of the Brethren July 10-14 from 6:30 until 8:30 p.m.

Registration is required.

Vacation Bible School at Fairview Community Church on Glade Road in Blacksburg will be July 10-14, from 7 until 9 p.m.

Classes will be offered for preschoolers to adults. 953-0367 or 382-1880.

Mountain United Methodist Church in Newbern will have Vacation Bible School July 13 and 14 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Children 3 to 18 are welcome. ``Seaside with the Savior'' is the theme. 674-6111.

``Appreciation of Ecology, the World God Created'' will be the focus of Vacation Bible School July 23-27 at First Baptist Church of Radford from 6:30 until 8:30 p.m. for children age 3 through sixth grade. 639-4419.

HAPPENINGS

Two adult Sunday School classes are being formed at Main Street Baptist Church in Christiansburg.

The classes, for people 25-45 years old, will meet for the first time Sunday.

Other classes are available for children and seniors. Classes meet at 9:45 and 10:45 a.m. 382-2160.

The first annual Women's Day Observance at First Missionary Baptist Church in New River is set for July 9.

The Women's Day Committee is raising money for the church's building fund, and contributions are needed by June 10. 639-5331.

The 17th annual Robert Sheffey Memorial Campmeeting will be at the campground near Wesley's Chapel in Trigg, Friday through July 14.

There will be nightly music featuring local choirs and groups. 921-2908.

Young people are invited to ``Keep the Fire'' meetings, sponsored by Straight Street, on the first Wednesday of every month at Straight Street, 7-8:30 p.m.

The evening features teaching and singing, followed by free food and games.

Youths at Auburn United Methodist Church will perform house cleaning, mowing or weeding.

Donations will be used to attend a youth conference. 382-4318.

Floyd Baptist Church is looking for former members to attend a homecoming in September.

Christian Community Outreach in Radford is having a food outreach on the fourth Thursday of every month at 7 p.m. at the Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers Union Hall in Fairlawn.

Food boxes will be available on a first-come, first-served basis to families and people who meet USDA income criteria. 639-5686.

\ PEOPLE

The Rev. Claud W. McCauley will retire as rector of Grace Episcopal Church in Radford on Aug. 31.

McCauley, who also is a past rector of Christ Episcopal Church in Blacksburg, will become part-time rector of St. Luke's Episcopal Church at Hot Springs.

At Grace Church, the Rev. Gene Anderson, who recently retired from a New York pastorate, will become interim rector after McCauley leaves.
