PULASKI - The annual Menagerie Show will be hosted during July by the Fine Arts Center of the New River Valley in its downtown Pulaski studio.
The show is open to anyone in the New River Valley interested in exhibiting artwork. Exhibitors may enter up to two pieces with a $2 entry fee for each piece.
``Menagerie is always a popular show,'' said center director Michael Dowell. ``It gives the shade-tree artist a chance to exhibit his or her talent and get feedback on it.''
Many previous exhibitors have gone on to win ribbons elsewhere, he said. ``This show has been the beginning of fairly successful art careers for some people.''
This exhibit is not judged. Dowell said its emphasis is on exposure.
``In addition to those artists who don't usually exhibit anywhere but the Menagerie show, we have many accomplished artists who enter the exhibit yearly. Bill Beamer, Sally Mook, Elizabeth Bonham and Betty Sadler immediately come to mind,'' he said. ``This exhibit gives real meaning to the phrase, 'Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.'''
Watercolor, acrylic and oil paintings will be included, but other forms of art are also being sought for the exhibit. Dowell said he would like to see the handiwork of woodworkers, weavers, lace-makers, sculptors, knitters and others.
``I always wonder if anyone working at Pulaski Furniture builds their own furniture designs at home on weekends,'' he said.

Reception to kick off new museum display
BLACKSBURG - The Museum of Natural History on North Main Street will soon unveil a new exhibit and everyone is invited to a kick-off reception.
The exhibit is called ``Buried Treasure, Cave of the Virginias.'' It will run until mid-September.
The free reception, from 5 to 7 p.m. on July 18, will feature a slide show and refreshments. The National Speleological Society will host it.
