VARNEY SET TO DEFEND HALEY TITLE

Defending champion Nick Varney of Roanoke heads a strong field that tees off today in the fifth annual Andrew Haley Memorial Junior golf tournament at Lynwood Golf Club in Martinsville.

Varney shot 1-under 141 to win last year's 16-17 title by four shots. Varney, 17, won the 14-15 title in 1993, making him the only player to ever win two age groups at the Haley.

South Boston's Matthew Anderson, who captured the 14-15 title in 1994, also is a contender in the 16-17 age group.

Brandon LaCroix of Roanoke rates as the favorite in this year's 21-player 14-15 field.

The 36-hole tournament also includes a girls' division and 12-13 boys' class. Roanoke's Lee Taylor, the defending 12-13 champion, didn't enter because he will be attempting to qualify for the U.S.Junior Championship today and Friday.
