Neighbors pulled the 39-year-old man out of a pool at Camden Court Apartments on Westover Avenue Southwest just after 10 p.m. Police would not release the man's name until relatives from out of state were notified.
George Radford was one of the neighbors who dove into the small, oval-shaped pool to pull the man out.
"I'd just parked my car [at the complex] when I heard this woman screaming," he said. The drowning victim was a guest of the woman, who lives at the apartments.
Radford saw a man lying on his side at the bottom of the 8-foot-deep end. It took Radford and three other men to pull the man onto the concrete.
Radford said they were trying to pump the water out of the man's lungs when rescue workers arrived.
Workers spent at least 10 minutes, Radford estimated, trying to resuscitate the man before lifting him on to a stretcher. Workers continued CPR as they pushed the stretcher across the grass and into an ambulance.
The man was taken to Roanoke Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Apartment manager Gary Beumer said the man was a guest of a tenant. The pool closes at 9 p.m., Beumer said, and the two should not have been swimming.
A fence, approximately 4 feet tall, surrounds the pool area.
