Red Cross chapter rechartered
CHRISTIANSBURG - The Montgomery County Chapter of the American Red Cross recently rechartered. For the first time, the national headquarters of the American Red Cross is evaluating every chapter individually against uniform requirements. Chapters that meet the organization's standards and accomplish its mission of helping people prevent, prepare and respond to emergencies, are being rechartered.
The Montgomery County chapter, originally chartered in 1917, successfully completed the rechartering process under the direction of the volunteer board of directors. The reorganization has led to reduced administrative costs through reduction of paid staff and more reliance on volunteerism, allowing more donated dollars to go toward services.
Some of the chapter's community support and services have included assisting with the re-establishment of the Floyd County chapter, small disaster relief, shelter operation, mass feeding, assistance to military, blood services, first aid, water safety education and HIV awareness education.
Some recent accomplishments include operation of two shelters serving 106 people and serving 210 meals during the New River Valley's 1994 ice storms, mobilizing damage assessment volunteers during the January floods and providing emergency assistance to one displaced family.
