Lopez started the rally with a double to left-center field off reliever Scott LaRock. Donovan Delaney followed with an infield single off the glove of Salem shortstop Chris Sexton to put runners at first and second. Sergio Nunez sacrificed to move the runners up and LaRock then got Anthony Modrano to foul out for the second out, bringing up Carlos Mendez. Higgins could not handle LaRock's second pitch to Mendez, and Lopez trotted home with the winning run.
It was a game of missed opportunities for Salem (12-7). The Avalanche, which has scored just two runs in its last 32 innings, left 13 men on base and left runners on base in every inning but the sixth. Salem's best chance to score came in the top of the eighth inning when Forry Wells and Brian Culp led off the inning with walks off reliever Dave Sinnes. Chris Connolly came in and threw a wild pitch to move the runners to second and third with no out, but Connolly struck out John Giudice, Pookie Jones and Keith Grunewald to end the threat.
Connolly (2-1) got the win after pitching two innings on one-hit relief for Wilmington (12-7), which took three of the four games in the series. LaRock (4-3), who gave up three hits and one unearned run in 1 2/3 innings, took the loss for Salem, which wasted another strong outing by starter Jamey Wright. Wright, who went seven innings and gave up five hits, has allowed just two runs in his last three starts only to pick up three straight no decisions.
