ROANOKE STAR FALLS 3-0 IN AUSTRIA CUP

The Roanoke Star under-15 team lost 3-0 to the Lokomotiv Sofia (Bulgaria) Junior Boys Team Professional Club in the quarterfinals of the Austria Cup on Saturday.

The Star played stellar defense, but the Bulgarian champions scored three goals in the second half to win. The Star now travels to Stuttgart, Germany, to play two matches. Lokomotiv Sofia will play Spakta of Russia in the finals of the Austria Cup.

In other sports in the region:

Brian Marsh, Tommy Rappold and Martha Snead, all of Roanoke, were among several dual winners at the Hargrave Invitational swim meet held at Hargrave Military in Chatham.

Marsh won the 200 breaststroke and 200 butterfly in the boys' 15-and-over division with times of 2 minutes, 32.12 seconds and 2:13.86, respectively. Rappold's time of 34.69 was good enough to win the 50 backstroke in the boys' 11-12 division. He also won the 100 breaststroke in 1:25.71. Snead, who competed in the girls' 11-12 division, won the 100 butterfly in 1:13.78 and the 50 freestyle in 29.86.

Jeff Stone of Salem finished fourth in his age group in the 1,500-meter run at the USA Track and Field National Masters Outdoor Championships in East Lansing, Mich.

Stone was clocked in 4:19.37, finishing behind Christopher Stewart, Tom Aspel and Tom Nehil in the 40- to 44-year-old age group. Because Stewart is Australian, Stone was awarded the bronze medal at the national championships.

Josh Salmon went 4-for-4 with four RBI to lead Roanoke Post 3 South past Patrick County Post 105 15-5 in an American Legion game in Stuart.

Brian Staggs gave up two earned runs on six hits in six innings to pick up the win and Robert Kaczmarek went the last three innings to get the save. Tommy Byer went 3-for-5 for Post 3 South.

Darrin Doss and Jon Fain each had two hits for Post 105.
