BONDS, Louise Cooper, 79, of Radford, died Friday, July 14, 1995 in Radford Community Hospital. She was born June 12, 1916 to the late Cantor and Dora Brown Cooper. Survivors include her husband, Clifton M. Bonds, Radford; ten daughters, Phyllis Burnette, Virginia Burnette, Doris Fitzgerald, Nancy Burnette, Norma Preston, Rosa Burnette, Mary Mitchell, all of Roanoke, Gloria Bernard, Roanoke, Helen Dean, and Brenda Bonds, both of Radford; three sons, Clarence Burnette, Charles Burnette, and James Burnette, all of Roanoke; one sister, Gladys Jones, Roanoke; 56 grandchildren; 70 great-grandchildren; and 6 great-great-grandchildren. A wake service will be held at Claytor-Dean Funeral Home, Sunday, July 16, 1995 from 7 to 8 p.m. A second wake service will be held at Bibleway Pentecostal Church from 12 noon to 1 p.m., Monday, July 17, 1995. Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Monday at Bibleway Ch urch, with Elder Ingram and Rev. Dean officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Mariah Cemetery.
BROWN, Mildred Virginia, 84, of Roanoke, passed away Thursday, July 13, 1995. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ford C. Brown Sr. and one son, Ford C. Brown Jr. Survivors include two sons, Joseph Brown, Charleston, S.C. and Donald Brown, Roanoke; four daughters, Maxine Cotton, Roanoke, Alma Brown, Scarsdale, N.Y., Mattie Minor and Marie Freeman, both of Roanoke; three brothers, Alfred Holland, Rocky Mount, Elijah Holland, Roanoke and Hardin Holland, Boston, Mass.; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday at the Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Chapel. The Rev. Larry Manns will officiate, with interment in Williams Memorial Park. BROWN, Vivian V., 72, of Roanoke, went to be with the Lord, Saturday, July 15, 1995. She was a member of Riverland Road Baptist Church. She is survived by her loving husband, H. Morton Brown, Roanoke; two daughters and sons-in-law, Candis and Roger Yeatts, Roanoke, Cindie and Philip Hayden, Vinton; sons and daughters-in-law, Stephen and Betty Brown, Vinton, Marc and Beverly Brown, Amherst; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild. BURDETTE, Walker S., 58, of Roanoke, died Saturday, July 15, 1995. He was a practicing architect in the Roanoke Valley for 36 years and was a member of A.I.A. He was a member of Walnut Grove Union Church and had most recently attended Maranatha Fellowship. Mr. Burdette was a member of Magna Charta and a member of the Washington Family Descendants. She was the daughter of the late Ernest Tilton and Nannie Bell Huffmond Jacobs was preceded in death by her husband, Vance Miller Flick, brother, Lowry O. Jacobs and sister, Claudia J. Almond. She was a member of Belmont Christian Church and Williamson Road Electa Chapter #3 3 of the Order of the Eastern Star was a retired supervisor from the American Viscose Corporation. She is survived by two brothers, Gorman W. Jacobs of Vinton, and Emmett L. Jacobs of Roanoke; a sister, Elsie J. Blair of Sandy Level; a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Gibson was born November 9, 1946, in Clifton Forge, a daughter of Alene Fortune Baker and the late Frank G. Long. She was a member of Calvary Christian Church. Mrs. Gibson was employed as an office manager with Covington Motors Inc. In addition to her husband and mother, she is survived by her stepfather, Ronald D. Baker, Covington; her maternal grandmother, Mrs. Frances Fortune, Waynesboro; two sons and daughter-in-law, Terry Lynn and Anne Kinsey, Ronald Kevin Kinsey, all of Covington; one stepdaughter, Miss Wendy Gibson, Low Moor; one brother, Frank G. JONES, Elvira Houston, 97, of San Mateo, Calif., died peacefully in her sleep on Friday, July 7, 1995, in her residential care facility, Portola Place, 445 Portola Dr., San Mateo, Calif. Miss Jones was born in Roanoke on April 9, 1898. She spent her early life in Lexington. She was educated in Lexington public schools, Longwood College in Farmville, and at Columbia University in New York, where she received her Master's Degree in History in 1930. She began her full and successful community service career as a teacher of History and English, first in Buchanan, and then in Covington, where she was also Assistant Principal. Later, she taught in private and public schools in Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. Her interest and concern for underprivileged children led her to leave teaching and take up social work because she felt she could be of more value in this field. She was especially interested in children's institutions and held executive positions in The Sheltering Arms, New York City, The Children's Community Center of New Haven, Conn., and the Newark Home for Foster Care in Newark, N.J. During her long, dedicated, and meaningful life, Miss Jones guided and helped countless young persons, who looked to her with respect and affection as a devoted and lifelong friend. Miss Jones retired in 1960 and took up residence in Princeton, N.J., where she lived for over 33 years. In retirement, she continued as an interested and active member of the community. She was a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church, the Princeton Historical Society, the American Association of University Women, the Wome n's College Club of Princeton, and the Colonial Dames of Virginia. Early in 1994, Miss Jones left her congregate care resident in Elm Court in Princeton, N.J., and moved to San Mateo, Calif. Miss Jones had a sister, Marion J. Merritt; and a brother, G. Alexander Jones Jr. Both predeceased her. Miss Jones raised two godsons, James C. Bennett, a graduate of the University of Virginia and until his death in 1992, a practicing attorney in Pennington, N.J., and Robert C. Bennett, a graduate of Princeton University and the Fletcher School and until his retirement in 1992, an officer of Citicorp/Citibank with overseas and domestic assignment. He is a resident of San Mateo, Calif. Miss Jones has four grandchildren, Gennifer Houston Bennett, Sandra Bowers Bennett, Sarah Jones Bennett, and Robert Perkins Bennett. At Miss Jones' request, there will be no funeral service. Interment and graveside service will be private at the Stonewall Jackson Cemetery in Lexington. PRATT, Eva Grogan, 85, of Henry County, died Friday, July 14, 1995 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. She was a past employee of Jobbers Pants Factory and retired from Robbie Sales. She was a member of Horsepasture Christian Church for 74 years and was a Sunday School teacher there for many years. She was born in Henry County December 30, 1909 to the late Robert William Grogan and Laura Smith Grogan. She was preceded in death by her husband, Same Frank Pratt, two sisters, Ethel Grogan Cruise and Katherine Grogan Smith, and one brother, Arthur English Grogan. She is survived by one daughter, Linda Pratt Edwards; one granddaughter, Dana M. Edwards; one sister, Mrs. Forrest S. Grogan, all of Roanoke; two sisters-in-law, Mattie S. Grogan, Ridgeway, Pearl Pratt, Spencer; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, July 16, at Horsepasture Christian Chu rch. QUARLES, Roy D., 88, of Roanoke, died Saturday, July 15, 1995. He was born December 16, 1906, in the Shady Grove Community of Bedford County, served in the United States Army during WW II, and was a long-time member of Hollins Road Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Irma F. Quarles; one daughter and son-in-law, Hazel and Dr. J. Michael Palmer; two grandchildren, Daniel and Suzanne Palmer, all of Roanoke; and a sister-in-law, Alice Quarles. THOMAS, Mrs. Elizabeth Princes, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, July 15, 1995. She was retired from the V.A. Hospital, Nursing Service Department, and served as Organist for Hill Street Baptist Church, where she was a member for may years. She also served as organist for Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home for several years. Survivors include a cousin and devoted companion, Mrs. Barbara Wilkinson.
