After the Freedom took a 1-0 lead in the shootout, Mitchell scored Roanoke's first shootout goal on the RiverDawgs' fourth try to tie the shootout. Fonder scored on Roanoke's final attempt, and goalie Aaron Ewert saved four of five shots - including the final one - to preserve the victory.
Philadelphia took a 2-0 lead in the first half before Roanoke's Brent Bennett scored at the 34-minute mark on an assist from Ivan Sampson to cut the lead to one. Four minutes later, Sampson scored on an assist from Grayson Prillaman to tie the score at 2.
The game went into overtime and Roanoke had a chance to win when Jack Armstrong took a shot that beat the Freedom goalie, but the ball bounced off a goal post.
