ROANOKE REGIONAL ECONOMIC INDICATORS

New-car registrations - generally an indicator of sales - took a dramatic downturn in the Roanoke Valley in June.

The Virginia Automobile Dealers Association reported that 730 cars were registered last month, down 29 percent from 1,030 in May. The number was off 26 percent from 987 in the same month a year ago. For the first six months, dealers registered 4,240 cars, down 14 percent from 4,937 a year ago.

Of the cars sold last month, 405 were registered in Roanoke, 254 in Roanoke County and 71 in Salem.
