OLD CHECKS WEREN'T FOR CASHING

A 30-year-old Pulaski County man faces charges of forgery and uttering following his arrest Monday after someone tried to cash a check drawn on a defunct Radford News Journal account.

Douglas James Dobbins was taken into custody shortly after a man tried to pass the bad check at Cedar Valley General Store, Radford police said Tuesday.

Store owner Jimmy Jones recalled a newspaper story a few days earlier reporting that someone had cashed an invalid News Journal check at a supermarket. He declined to cash the check and, instead, got the suspect's license plate number and a description of his vehicle. He then called police.

The Pulaski County Sheriff's Office said Dobbins also faces two counts of forgery and uttering involving bad checks at the Kroger supermarket in Fairlawn and the Shop Eez store on Virginia 100 in Dublin.

Authorities said Dobbins might have had access to Radford News Journal checks because his mother once worked at the newspaper. Radford Police Lt. Detective Wayne Frye said Dobbins' mother would not be charged and no one else was involved.

Dobbins also was charged with driving after his license had been suspended.

He was released from Radford City Jail after posting $20,000 bond.
