MAXEY, Benjamin Mathew, 71, of Rocky Mount, died Monday, July 17, 1995. Born September 7, 1923, he was the son of the late Monty and Bea Ferguson Maxey and a veteran of the United State Marines. Surviving are his wife, Thelma Maxey, of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Betty M. and Sammy Jones, Rocky Mount, Bonnie W. and Hurbert Arrington, Pellam, N.C.; one son and daughter-in-law, Buddy and Jacqueline Wade, Rocky Mount; six grandchildren, Danny Arrington and Donna Clay, both of North Carolina, Tracy Wade, Anita Bowman, Connie Jones and Sammy Jones, all of Rocky Mount; three great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Bobbie Joe Hodges, Rocky Mount. Graveside funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 20, 1995, at Mountain View Memorial Park, Boones Mill, Va., with the Rev. Rick Polland officiating. ACKERLY, Nadyne Elizabeth, 84, of Roanoke, passed away Monday, July 17, 1995. She was a retired employee of Puritan Mills. Surviving are a number of nieces and nephews. BURTON, Mrs. Betty Christine Hall, (``Abb""), 59, of 3923 Brook St., Bluefield, W.Va., formerly of Montgomery Co., Va., died Saturday, July 15, 1995, in a Bluefield Hospital. Born in Montgomery Co., Va., she was the daughter of Leonard James Hall of Bluefield and the late Nellie Jane Hamlin Hall. She formerly attended Edgemont Baptist Church of Bluefield and was a resident of Bluefield most of her life. She was preceded in death by a son, James ``Eddie"" Burton. She is survived by her husband, John P. Burton of the home; stepmother, Mrs. Doris Irene Hall, Bluefield; two sons, Phyllip W. Burton, Michael R. COOK, Sue Wynn, 94, of Roanoke, died Monday night, July 17, 1995 at her home. She was the widow of Russell Henry Cook Sr. She was devoted to her family and had a special love for music and flowers. She was a longtime member of Virginia Heights Baptist Church. Surviving are four children, Mildred C. Jofko, Roanoke, William Robert Cook Sr., Blacksburg, Sally Lee Cook, Cary, N.C., Samuel Lewis Cook Sr., Roswell, Ga.; 11 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel 10:30 a.m. Thursday with Dr. Daniel E. Scott officiating. Burial will be at Evergreen Burial Park. HECK, E. Rodney, 65, of Eagle Rock, died Tuesday, July 18, 1995. He is survived by his wife, Doris T. JOHNS, Dr. Vernon Orville, of Blacksburg, went to be with our Lord, Tuesday, July 18, 1995 in Radford, Va. He was the son of the late David Elmer and Olive Heikes Johns. He was preced ed in death by his wife, Beatrice Draper Johns, a brother, Irvin H. Johns, and a grandson, Leonard L. Jennelle Jr. Dr. Johns was born September 14, 1900 in Longford, Kansas. He received his B.A., M.A. and Ph.D from Kansas University. He came to Blacksburg in 1926 and taught in the Business Department at Va. Tech until his retirement in 1969, touching many lives during his 43 year tenure. Dr. Johns was listed in the 1967-68 issues of Who's Who in the South and Southeast. He was a charter member of the University Club and also held membership in the American Association of University Professors, American Economics Association, National Tax Association, Blacksburg Country Club and Hunter's Masonic Lodge of the Free Masons for 73 years. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl Johns and Leonard Jennelle of Blacksburg; granddaughters and husband, Lisa J. and Mike Tilley, Roanoke, Karen Jennelle, Fairfax; great-granddaughter, Alexa Tilley, Roanoke; one nephew, James Johns; two nieces, Betty Bertrand and Nancy Peterson, all of Syracuse, N.Y. Funeral services will be held Friday, July 21, 1995 at 11 a.m. in the McCoy Funeral Home Chapel, with Dr. Donald McKinney officiating. LOWE, Alma Dent, 68, of Narrows, died Monday, July 17, 1995, in the Giles Memorial Hospital in Pearisburg, Va. A lifelong resident of Giles County, She was born at Pearisburg, Va., on November 25, 1926, and was the daughter of the late Dewey Coburn and Lillie Davis Dent. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Narrows. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Robert Lowe Jr. She is survived by three sons, Donald E. Lowe, Rich Creek, James R. Lowe III, Newport News, Russell R. Lowe, Rich Creek; two daughters, Patricia L. Ray, Richmond, Sharon L. Heslep, Princeton, W.Va.; a brother, Robert E. Dent Sr., Hampton; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. MOREFIELD, Lewis Jackson, 77, of Pulaski, died Tuesday, July 18, 1995 in the Lewis-Gale Hospital, Salem. He was born in Draper, and was the son of the late Henry B. and Mary Elizabeth Morefield. He was also preceded in death by five brothers and two sisters. Mr. Morefield was a retired employee of the State of Delaware. He was a decorated veteran of WWII, USMC, where he saw action in Iwo Jima, Okinawa and the Pacific Theater. He was a member of the Pulaski American Legion Post #7, the Pulaski Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1184 and the Bob White Blvd. Ch urch of God. Surviving are three children, Fred H. Morefield, Burke, Nancy M. Boone, New Castle, Ron Morefield, Eustis, Fla.; one sister, Ruth M. Hubble, Pulaski; one brother, Rev. William T. (""Bill"") Morefield, Cleveland, Tenn.; three grandsons; three granddaughters. Funeral services will be held Friday, July 21, 1995 at 2 p.m. from the Bob White Blvd. Church of God, Pulaski, with the Rev. Robert Owens officiating. SMITH, Walter Benson Sr., 63, of Radford, died Monday night, July 17, 1995, in a Roanoke hospital. He retired from Hercules in 1987 with 35 years service and was a member of Craighill Masonic Lodge #160 in Elliston.
