REPORTED EARNINGS

Caterpillar Inc., Peoria, Ill., manufacturer of heavy machinery and parent of Carter Machinery Co. of Salem, reported second quarter earnings of $323 million, or $1.62 a share, on revenues of $4.2 billion, compared with year-earlier $240 million, or $1.18 per share, on revenues of $3.6 billion. For the first half year, earnings were $623 million, or $3.11 a share, on revenues of $8.12 billion, compared with year-earlier $432 million, or $2.12 a share, on revenues of $6.8 billion.

Stanley Furniture

Stanley Furniture Co. Inc. of Stanleytown reported net income of $719,000, or 15 cents per share, on sales of $38.2 million for its second quarter ended July 2, compared with year-earlier $957,000, or 20 cents per share, on sales of $44.1 million. For the first half year, net income was $1.5 million, or 32 cents per share, on sales of $83.2 million, compared with year-earlier $585,000, or 12 cents per share, on sales of $88.8 million.
