FLA. WOMAN DROWNS WHILE VISITING LAKE

A Florida woman drowned in Smith Mountain Lake on Friday evening after swimming a short distance from the Penhook Boat Dock.

Lyndalou Tenhouten Webb, 62, of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., was visiting a friend at the lake when she decided to take a swim about 7:45, according to Officer Tim Hayes, game and inland fisheries department.

Jack Buck, the friend Webb was visiting, watched as Webb swam about 12 feet from the Penhook dock. She turned to swim back and went under, Hayes said.

Buck told Hayes he dived in to search for Webb, but after a couple of dives could not find his friend. He left the water to call for help.

Hayes would not comment on whether Webb had been drinking alcoholic beverages. He did say it appeared no foul play was involved in the drowning, but an investigation is being done.

Webb's body was recovered by the Scruggs Rescue Squad dive team about 9:45 p.m. in 16 feet of water.

Hayes was assisted by the Franklin County Sheriff's Office, Cool Branch Rescue Squad and Smith Mountain Lake Volunteer Fire Department.
