CHRISTIANSBURG - Leadership and communication skills are essential for success in today's business world. To climb the corporate ladder, people must be able to identify and enhance their personal leadership talents and use them effectively.
Leadership New River Valley is a program designed to teach individuals these business skills. Sponsored by several area chambers of commerce, the program was created about 10 years ago to bring together individuals from diverse backgrounds and experiences, challenge them to become more actively involved in community affairs and educate them about the dynamics of social, governmental and economic changes. The program also provides participants with the opportunity to meet local residents, establish contacts and network.
"Leadership is a dynamic learning experience for business people who want to be informed about our area, enhance their skills and be prepared for advancement on the coprorate ladder," said Kathy Mantz, executive director of the Christiansburg-Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce. Also, newcomers to the area will learn more about the New River Valley, she said.
This year's program starts Sept. 19. Sessions will be held Tuesdays from 7 to 9 p.m. at various locations throughout the New River Valley.
The first session will feature Richard Harshberger from Virginia Tech's Pamplin College of Business.
During the nine-week program, participants will be assigned to groups to work on case studies in areas ranging from public transportation to the recreation and entertainment industry. Time will be given to prepare and discuss the case studies during two class sessions.
Each session will include two 60-minute seminars. Other speakers include university professors and business and community leaders.
A graduation banquet will be held during the last session and certificates will be awarded to those who attend seven of the nine sessions.
Cost of the leadership program is $99 if registration is postmarked by Sept. 10. After Sept. 10, the cost is $125. The registration deadline is Sept. 19.
Other chambers of commerce involved in the program include Giles County, Greater Blacksburg, Pulaski and Radford.
