FLA. WOMAN DROWNS WHILE VISITING FRIEND

A Florida woman drowned in Smith Mountain Lake after swimming a short distance from the Penhook boat dock.

Lyndalou Tenhouten Webb, 62, of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., was visiting a friend at the lake when she decided to take a swim Friday evening, according to Officer Tim Hayes of the Game and Inland Fisheries Department.

Jack Buck, the friend Webb was visiting, watched as Webb swam about 12 feet away from the Penhook dock. She turned to swim back and went under, Hayes said.

Buck told Hayes he dove in and searched for her, but after a couple of dives could not find his friend. He left the water to call for help.

Hayes said it appeared no foul play was involved in the drowning.

Webb drowned about 7:45 p.m., and her body was recovered by the Scruggs Rescue Squad dive team about 9:45 p.m. in 16 feet of water.

Hayes was assisted by the Franklin County Sheriff's Office, Cool Branch Rescue Squad and the Smith Mountain Lake Volunteer Fire Department.
