Training for teachers|
RADFORD - Several area high school science teachers are attending a training seminar at Radford University that focuses on using state-of-the-art technology-based laboratory software and equipment.
During the two-week session, teachers will have the opportunity to test software that has not yet been used in the classroom and learn how to incorporate the software in an education plan.
School systems in Wise, Smyth and Pulaski counties are converting their science labs into technology-based labs in the fall, complete with computers, probes and interface boxes. It's projected that within five years, every high school in these counties will be converted into technology-based labs. Marion and Pulaski high schools each sent two teachers to participate in the pilot program.
The seminar's focus will also include how to use the equipment and interface it with the software while using existing classroom activities. Teachers will also learn to develop new classroom activities that will correspond with the state's learning standards and national standards for science education.
The seminar project is a partnership between Appalachian Power Co., V-Quest - Virginia's National Science Foundation state systemic initiative, Pasco Scientific - the equipment manufacturer - and Radford University.
