Clarence J. Lynch, the owner of Williams Memorial Park on Westside Boulevard, told police he was in his office Friday morning when a youth entered the building carrying a pipe wrapped in white cloth.
Lynch told police the youth cursed him as he got up from his desk chair and then struck him in the forehead and back with the pipe.
The youth then fled. Lynch was treated at Lewis-Gale Hospital.
Lynch told police that the same youth had been to the cemetery the day before, and that he had asked him to leave after he walked into the office for no apparent reason.
Police said they are investigating the incident along with a similar report Sunday.
A 74-year-old man told police he was robbed Sunday morning while visiting his wife's grave at the adjacent St. Andrew's Cemetery on Salem Turnpike Northwest. Herman J. Altizer Jr. said he was approached by a young man carrying a pipe and demanding money. After Altizer gave him $5, he told police, the youth demanded more money before leaving. Altizer was not injured.
