SEAMAN RECRUIT JASON W. LAYMAN, son of Tony L. Layman of 1102 Christy Circle, Salem, recently completed Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. He is a 1994 graduate of Franklin County High School.

PETTY OFFICER 2ND CLASS JONATHAN ROBINSON and PETTY OFFICER 3RD CLASS MARIDEL B. BIVENS recently returned from a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean Sea on the USS Shenandoah.

Robinson, son of Rosa L. Robinson of Cove Road, is a 1975 graduate of Patrick Henry High School.

Bivens, daughter of Eduardo C. and Flordeliza St. Veloso of Mountain Road, is a 1990 graduate of Salem High School.

AIRMAN JAMES L. RAY recently graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.

Ray is the son of Dale E. Ray of Roanoke and is a 1989 graduate of Salem High School and a 1994 graduate of Roanoke College.

MAJ. JAYSON A. ALTIERI, son of Mr. and Mrs. A.C. Altieri of Fincastle, has earned the Defense Department's military outstanding volunteer service medal.

Altieri is a 1982 graduate of Northside High School and a member of the Civil Air Patrol and the North Carolina Wing's Fayetteville Composite Squadron.

The award recognizes those who perform outstanding volunteer service that produces tangible results and reflects favorably on the Department of Defense.

PFC. MICHELLE D. TAYLOR, daughter of Frances S. Gates of Roanoke, recently completed training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C.

Taylor is a 1988 graduate of William Fleming High School.
