FAST DATA COMING TO HOMES

Bell Atlantic Corp. said it plans to offer high-speed residential phone service this fall for use in data communications, telecommuting for office workers and accessing the Internet and online services.

The Integrated Services Digital Network that the phone company plans to sell to all of its residential customers in the mid-Atlantic region provides digital communications at 128 kilobits per second or 500 kps using data compression technology. By comparison, the fastest computer modems in general use now operate at 28 kps.

ISDN technology combines voice, data and video signals on a single phone line. The company already is providing the service to its business customers.

Bell Atlantic plans a three-month market trial of the residential service with 1,000 customers in Baltimore and four Maryland counties. It will use the trial to find what residential customers are looking for in the service, the company said.

During the trial, two data-channel service will cost approximately $30 a month, which includes the cost of required residential measured-rate telephone service and timed use prices of either 2 cents or 1 cent per minute depending on the hour and day of the week.

Online service or Internet users who are interested the service can send an e-mail message to Bell Atlantic at isdncinbell-atl.com. Bell Atlantic news releases, speeches and other information are available on the World Wide Web at http://www.ba.com or by gopher at gopher://ba.com.
