EXPRESS' SLATE HEAVY ON WEEKENDS

Twenty home weekend dates and an unprecedented three Sunday afternoon matinees highlight the Roanoke Express' 1995-96 East Coast Hockey League schedule announced Monday.

The schedule includes 70 regular-season games - two more than last season - and three preseason games, two of which will be played on the road.

By virtue of a rule change in the 21-team league, Roanoke will play 18 of the other 20 ECHL clubs at least once. The Knoxville Cherokees and expansion Louisiana Ice Gators are the two teams not on the Express schedule. In addition to playing each of its five East Division rivals (South Carolina, Raleigh, Richmond, Hampton Roads and Charlotte) a total of 10 games each, the Express will play 10 of the remaining 15 clubs at least once at the Roanoke Civic Center.

The 20 weekend dates are more than the Express had last season. The three Sunday afternoon games are two more than in the franchise's first two seasons combined.

Roanoke opens the regular season at home on Friday, Oct.13 against the Richmond Renegades, the defending Riley Cup champions.
