Pops chorus audition

The Lynchburg Fine Arts Center will hold auditions for new members for the adult pops chorus FACination. The date of the audition is Sept. 6 from 7-9 p.m.

Singers do not have to prepare a vocal selection. Each individual audition will last approximately five to 10 minutes.

Application deadline

The Virginia Commission for the Arts has announced an Oct. 2 deadline for applications for its Individual Artist Fellowships in creative writing. A limited number of fellowships of up to $5,000 are available to professional writers. Funding is highly competitive.

Applications will be reviewed by a panel of writers and editors. Results will be announced around Dec. 30. All applications must be received by 5 p.m. on Oct. 2.

Polo Cup scheduled

The Eighth Annual Roanoke Symphony Polo Cup will be held Oct. 7 at Green Hill Park from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The match will begin at 2 p.m.

A Pre-Polo Gala will be held Oct. 6 in Salem. Proceeds will benefit the Roanoke Symphony Education Programs.

`Pocahontas' on stage

ABINGDON - Disney's movie folks are not the only ones who are featuring a story about Pocahontas. Barter's First Light Theatre is performing its version of her story from now through the Virginia Highlands Festival in early August.

Written and directed by Susanne Boulle, the production includes original music and American Indian dance.

"Pocahontas' efforts to make peace between the members of her tribe and the English settlers were nothing less than heroic," Boulle said. "The play stays true to history, but we've added a little First Light magic."

The play features Noel Williams, Mandy Dooley, Erica Sutton, Julian Rozzel, Andreas Lopez, Catherine Crosby, Jolene Vettese, Jay Apking, Rachel Stone, Christian Aldridge and Harvey Johnson. Choreography is by Jessie Blackburn and costumes by Mandy Dooley. Jolanda Walter is stage manager, and original music is by the entire First Light Company.

Quilt show

The Mountain Comforts Quilt Show will be held in October at the Blue Ridge Folklife Festival at Ferrum College.

The show's purpose is to stimulate interest in quilting, to display works of past and present quilters, and to photograph the quilt collection and record information on the makers and the history of the quilts for the Blue Ridge Institute archives.

Art Show '95

The Smith Mountain Arts Council will hold its Art Show '95 from Sept. 24 through Oct. 8, at the Old Moneta Medical Center. The show will include three-dimensional art, sculpture, painting, and photography.

A Sneak Preview Champagne Reception will be held Sept. 23 from 4 to 6 p.m.

The Old Moneta Medical Center is located on Virginia 806 just off Virginia 122 in Moneta, above the Moneta Post Office and library.

The deadline for artist entries is Sept. 15.
