CADETS OF BERGEN, N.J., WIN IN SALEM CONTEST

The Cadets of Bergen County placed first in the Summer Music Games of Southwest Virginia at Salem Stadium on Tuesday night. The Bergenfield, N.J., drum corps scored 92.7 out of a possible 100.

The Madison Scouts of Madison, Wis., placed second with 91.9.

Kurt Akers, a graduate of Salem High School, has played bass drum for The Cadets for three years.

The six-time world champion Cadets will compete in this year's finals in Buffalo, N.Y., on Aug. 12.
