RICHMOND - Attorney General Jim Gilmore raised nearly $300,000 in the first six months of this year, including $50,000 from Edward Via of Roanoke.
Republican Gilmore and Democratic Lt. Gov. Don Beyer are likely rivals for the 1997 gubernatorial election. According to federal election fund-raising reports he filed, Gilmore rased $297,577 in the first six months of 1995. Beyer has raised $151,402. The largest donation to the Beyer campaign was $7,500 from Alan Wurtzel, vice chairman of Circuit City Stores Inc.

Small earthquake hits Eastern Va.
YORKTOWN - A minor earthquake rumbled portions of York and Gloucester counties Thursday morning.
The quake measured 2.6 on the Richter scale, according to scientists at the Virginia Tech Seismological Observatory, who detected it on instruments in Goochland County west of Richmond and in Blacksburg. Magnitude 2 is the smallest normally felt by human beings, while 3.5 magnitude has the potential for slight damage.

W&M enrollment sets record
WILLIAMSBURG - The College of William and Mary is preparing for the biggest freshman class in its 302-year history - 1,414 students.
The Class of 1999 will break the 1988 record of 1,330.
