LOCAL GOLFERS WIN TOURNEY

Nick Varney and Adam Harrell each won their respective age divisions at the Woodlake Tarheel Junior Open at the 7,040-yard Woodlake Country Club course in Pinehurst, N.C.

Varney, a former Glenvar standout, shot a 74 on the final day of the three-round tournament to finish at 225 in the 16-17 age division.

Harrell shot an 80 to finish at 225 in the 18-21 division.

Andrew Miller carded a 240 to finish 15 strokes back in the 18-21 age group.

Brandon LaCroix of Roanoke shot a 3-over-par 75 to take the lead in the 14-15 age group at the Salisbury Junior Classic at Salisbury Country Club in Richmond. He is one stroke back from the overall lead.

Two Roanoke swimmers finished fifth at the Long Course Swimming Nationals in Nashville, Tenn. Brian Finucane completed the 200-meter freestyle race in 2:01.06 and Matt McCleod finished the 50 breast stroke in 31:34.
