AVALANCHE BULLPEN FAILS IN 7-2 SETBACK

The Salem Avalanche bullpen gave up six runs in the seventh and eighth innings Friday as Salem fell 7-2 to the Durham Bulls in the Carolina League, spoiling the debut of Salem starter Mike Kusiewicz.

Kusiewicz struggled early but found his groove, going six innings and giving up one run on seven hits while striking out seven. Kusiewicz retired 11 straight at one point and left with a 2-1 lead.

Durham (17-23) scored five runs in the seventh off Salem reliever Mark Brownson.

With one out, Andre King walked and scored on a double by Gator McBride, who was 3-for-5. Durham took a 3-2 lead when Mickey Correa doubled home McBride, putting runners at second and third. Randall Simon walked to load the bases with John Knott coming up. Brownson (0-1) then hit Knott with a pitch, bringing home Monds, and Lou Benbow followed with a two-run single to make the score 6-2. Monds' solo homer in the eighth off Chris Stewart provided the final margin.
