Thompson, a 46-year-old Hollins College graduate who won the 1973 championship, and Dodie Mazzuca, 20, of Santa Cruz, Calif., were the only players to break par on The Country Club course.
``I remember the 1973 Women's Amateur as the first really big tournament I won,'' said Thompson, making her 30th appearance in the tournament. ``That, along with my win at the 1974 British Ladies Amateur are the highlights of my career. I'm just amazed that I've been able to play so well for so long.''
The low 64 players after today's second round of stroke play will advance to match play. The tournament ends Saturday with a 36-hole final.
Jonathan Edwards, an unassuming British triple-jumper who finds it hard to believe what he has accomplished, smashed the world record twice at the World Track and Field Championships in Goteborg, Sweden.
In shattering the mark for the first time, Edwards became the first jumper to surpass 59 feet, his previous record, by soaring 59-7, on his first attempt.
On his second try, he surpassed the magical 60-foot barrier by a quarter of an inch.
``It is difficult to take in,'' Edwards, 29, said after setting the record of 59 feet in Salamanca, Spain, breaking Willie Banks' 10-year-old mark of 58-11 1/2. ``In my mind, there is still a distance between what I read about and who I am.''
Former Virginia quarterback Shawn Moore is on the move again. Moore, who joined the Canadian Football League's Ottawa Rough Riders this season after serving as an NFL backup, was traded to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers to complete a deal that brought quarterback Sammy Garza to Ottawa. The Rough Riders have struggled to a 1-5 start, but the Blue Bombers haven't fared much better, at 2-4.
