TECH CATCHES RECEIVER

THE HOKIES GET A HEAD START on football recruitment with a commitment from Greg Myers and may have yet another recruit in fullback Jeremy Kishbaugh.

Virginia Tech continues to enjoy early recruiting success in Northeast Pennsylvania, receiving at least one more summer football commitment.

Jim McGovern, the head coach at Crestwood High School in Mountain Top, Pa., said Tuesday that 6-foot-3, 210-pound wide receiver Greg Myers plans to sign with the Hokies.

Sources said the Hokies also had received a commitment from Jeremy Kishbaugh, a fullback and linebacker from Berwick (Pa.) High School, a two-time national champion.

``Did they get Kishbaugh?'' asked McGovern, whose team plays in the same conference as Berwick. ``Wow! That kid's an animal. He's probably the most physical football player I've seen in the last 10 years.''

Tech earlier had received an oral commitment from Kishbaugh's teammate, Berwick wide receiver Brian Remley. They join quarterback Nick Sorensen from George Marshall High School in Falls Church, the first of four Hokies commitments.

``With the academic requirements that the schools are facing now, the pressure's on to find kids who qualify,'' McGovern said. ``There's a premium on kids who meet the criteria right now.''

Myers had a 3.6 grade-point average and a score of 980 on the Scholastic Assessment Test. He was being recruited by Northwestern, Florida, Michigan and Stanford before committing to Tech.

``You've got to understand that Greg is a person from a rural community,'' McGovern said. ``He just fell in love with Virginia Tech. You wouldn't believe how much Blacksburg is like Mountaintop.''

Myers and the two Berwick players all were recruited for Tech by assistant Terry Strock, who is responsible for the Wilkes-Barre area.

McGovern said Myers made all-league both ways as a junior and had more than 40 receptions as a wide receiver, with six interceptions from his free-safety spot. Myers also returned seven punts or kickoffs for touchdowns, his coach reported.

``His best asset is that he's just a tremendous athlete,'' McGovern said. ``He's got tremendous speed and body strength and he's not completely grown yet.''

McGovern put Myers' speed in the 4.5-second range for 40 yards and said he has lifted 300 pounds in the bench press and 400 in the squat. Myers also was the leading scorer for the Crestwood boys' basketball team.
