FLIPPEN MEDALIST AT U.S. AM QUALIFYING

Jimmy Flippen carded a 137 to take medalist honors at the U.S. Amateur qualifying Monday evening at Petersburg Country Club in Petersburg.

Flippen, a University of Virginia standout, shot a 66 and then a 71 in the 36-hole tournament to grab one of four spots for the U.S. Amateur to be played Aug. 22-27 at Newport Country Club in Newport, R.I.

Virginia Tech golfer Curtis Deal fired a 145 to finish tied for second with Mark Gauley of Greensboro. Virginia Tech captain Sean Farrell of Zimbabwe also qualified, with a146.

Five players are tied at 147 for alternate positions.
