4TH TIME IS CHARM FOR LESPERANCE

Tommy Lesperance's performance Tuesday wasn't as impressive as Monday's, but it was enough for a victory.

Lesperance shot a 1-under-par 70 to finish at 8-under 134 en route to winning the Senior Division of the two-day Roanoke Valley Golf Association City-County Junior Championships at Countryside. Lesperance finished one stroke ahead of Patrick Henry High School's Mark Baldwin to win his first RVGA title in four attempts.

The Glenvar High School star birdied the 13th and 17th holes to overcome a 3-over front nine. On Monday at Blue Hills, Lesperance had two eagles and no bogeys.

``The first nine holes [Tuesday], I just tried to play safe and hit the greens,'' said Lesperance, who added that the heat hasn't bothered him the past two days because of his early tee time. ``But that's not my style of game.''

Baldwin carded a 68 on Tuesday to finish at 7-under 135. He had four birdies, including the par-3 14th and 16th holes.

``I played pretty well, but I couldn't birdie unless I got close,'' Baldwin said. ``I didn't make anything from more than 10 feet away.''

Justin Young, who was tied with Northside teammate Jason Orlando at 68 after the first round, shot another 68 to place third at 136. Orlando shot 73 and finished fourth with 141. (Results in Scoreboard. B4)

In the Junior division, Lord Botetourt's Daryl Byrd shot a second-round 75 to finish with a 145 total and his first title.

``I think it's about time,'' said Byrd, who has been golfing for about eight years.

Matt Chandler, who was four strokes back after the first round, shot a 73 to finish second, at 147.

In the Midget division, Chris McCorkle shot a 41 to finish at 82 and take the title. Jason Blake, who was tied with McCorkle after the first round, carded a 47 to finish third. Charlie Patterson shot 42 on Tuesday and 86 for the two days to place second.

For the second consecutive year, Michael Kidd won the Pee Wee division. Kidd, 9, shot a 29 to defeat Matt Willard by one stroke.

``I played pretty good,'' Kidd said after winning his second title in three days. He and his father, David, won the parent-child golf competition Sunday at Hanging Rock.
