$632,990 AWARD IN KILLING BY TROOPER

A Covington man was awarded $632,990 by a Fayette County jury in his wrongful-death lawsuit against a state trooper who shot the man's mother to death in 1976.

Gary K. Shanklin Jr., 28, of Covington had filed the lawsuit against James W. Riser, 52, who was convicted of first-degree murder in 1977 and spent a dozen years in prison for killing Sharon Shanklin.

Prosecutors said Riser killed Shanklin on Dec. 26, 1976, at her mobile home in Hinton over an ``unsatisfactory love affair.'' Riser was on duty and in uniform when he shot Shanklin, the lawsuit said.
