WRITERS CONFERENCE TO HEAR 'PARALLEL TIMES' AUTHOR

Brent Staples, whose gritty memoir "Parallel Time" was published in 1994, will speak at the Blue Ridge Writers Conference in October.

The New York Times editorial writer will speak at Roanoke College's Olin Hall Theatre at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 6. His talk is open to the public, but seating is limited and reservations are required. Staples also will discuss editorial writing and his book at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 7, in Olin Hall.

"Parallel Time" begins and ends with the murder - apparently drug-related - of Staples' brother, Blake, in Roanoke in 1984.

The conference also includes talks and workshops on writing poetry, magazine articles, short stories, essays and newspaper columns.

Registration deadline is Sept. 30, or Sept. 1 for those submitting manuscripts to be critiqued.
