MONTVALE MAN KILLED IN CRASH

A Montvale man was killed and his brother injured Friday after their station wagon was hit about 10 a.m. by a tractor-trailer on U.S. 460.

Randall Scott Lance, 30, died at 12:30 p.m. at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. His brother, David Michael Lance, 38, was taken to Bedford County Memorial Hospital, where he was listed in satisfactory condition Friday afternoon.

The truck driver, Ronnie Morris of Madison Heights, had been trying to avoid hitting a pickup truck. Ruth Irmer of Thaxton pulled out of the Roadside Market at 460 and Virginia 691 into Morris' path, according to state police Sgt. Lee Willis.

Irmer, 78, was charged with failing to yield the right of way.

Morris, an employee of Wilkins Construction Co., tried to avoid Irmer's pickup but hit it and lost control of his truck, Willis said. Morris' truck crossed the median and struck the Lance brothers' station wagon, which was waiting to turn.
