STOCKHOLM, Sweden - Prime Minister Ingvar Carlsson unexpectedly announced Friday that he will resign in March, more than two years before his four-year term expires.

In a nationally broadcast news conference, Carlsson said he has fulfilled most of his goals since returning to office last year and wanted to spend more time with his family.

Bermuda will seek new leader

HAMILTON, Bermuda - The search for Bermuda's new leader began Friday after Premier John Swan kept his promise to resign if voters rejected independence from Britain.

A caucus of Swan's United Bermuda Party met to honor him and open the race for his successor to party legislators. Voters in this mid-Atlantic island colony rejected independence resoundingly on Wednesday.

Nominations signed by five parliament members in the governing party are due Tuesday, and the caucus votes Friday.
