AMES, Paul Shelton, of Salem, died Thursday, August 17, 1995. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Frances Ferguson Ames; a son and daughter-in-law, David and Carol Ayers of Salem; daughter and son-in-law, Helen and Jack Proctor of Smith Mountain Lake; daughter, Barbara Brown of Salem; a brother, William Ames of Roanoke; a sister, Edith Mann of Salem; eight grandchildren, Alex Brown, Gibson Brown, Elizabeth Brown Repass, and Paul Ames, all of Salem, Matthew Ames of Roanoke, Shelton Brown Du ffy of Fredricksburg, David Proctor of Birmingham, Ala., and Patrick Proctor of St. Petersburg, Fla.; and eleven great-grandchildren. Mrs. Ames retired as a plasterer at Roanoke Memorial Hospital in his eightieth year. His ornate plaster work in the Cherry Hill Mansion Dining Room was replicated in the Art Museum of Western Virginia. Mr. Ames was always proud of his craftsmanship in the Lee Chapel and many columns at Washington and Lee University, the Masonic Temple in Atlanta, Ga., the Don CeSar Hotel in St. Petersburg, Fla., and the downtown John M. Oakey Chapel in Roanoke. Mr. Ames was a charter member and a deacon of the Bethel Baptist Church in Salem. Mr. Ames donated his body to the Medical College of virginia for medical research. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 Sunday afternoon at 721 Red Lane, Salem. Memorial services will be held at Bethel Baptist Church on Monday at 11 a.m.

BAILEY, Cardella Neighbors, 85, of Salem, passed away Thursday, August 17, 1995 in her home. She was born July 14, 1910. She was retired from Richfield Nursing Center, and a member of the Evangelical Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Hoggie Bailey; and a son, Albert Ray Bailey. She is survived by one son and his wife, Jerry W. and Janie B. Bailey Sr., Salem; three daughters, and their husbands, Elsie B. and Hampton Hudson Jr., San Manuel, Ariz., Charie B. and Joe D. Terry, Salem, and Shelvie C. and Arthur D. Hale Sr., Roanoke; three grandsons, Robert L. Hudson Sr., Jerry W. Bailey Jr., Arthur D. Hale Jr.; six granddaughters including, Leigh Anne Miller, Sherry H. Spradlin, Angela B. Harris, Donna H. Woolcott; three great-grandsons; and eight great-granddaughters; nieces, nephews, and other family members. Funeral services will be held Monday, August 21, 1995 at 10 a.m. at the Lotz Salem Chapel with the Rev. Howard Torrence and Rev. James Burke officiating. CALLAHAN, Lydia Copenhaver, 95, of Crockett, died Friday, August 18, 1995 in the Birdmont Health Care Center, Wytheville. She was born in Wythe County, the daughter of the late Sanders Frazier Copenhaver and Sarah Elizabeth Umberger Copenhaver. She was a member of Mt. Ephriam United Methodist Church and a lifetime member of the UMW. She was a Pink Lady at Malin Hospital for 25 years and past president of the Crockett Home Demonstration Club. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Boyer Callahan; a son, J. W. Callahan; and a son-in-law, David E. Kincer. She is survived by one son and two daughters-in-law, Ted F. and Maude Callahan, Bristol, Clara L. Callahan, Wytheville; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Irene C. and Bill Holliday, Marion, Katheryn C. Kincer, Crockett, Helen C. and Woody Akers, Wytheville; one sister, Estelle C. Willard, Rural Retreat; ten grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Sunday, August 20, 1995, 2 p.m. at the Mt. Survivors include two sons, Theodore R. (Virginia) Cotton Jr., California, Walter B. Cotton, Philadelphia, Pa.; two daughters, Gladys L. (Stafford) Rosser, and Mary Jane Holmes, both of Roanoke; nieces, Ollie M. Pittman, Lexington, Ky., Claude Fralin and Gloria T. Williams, Roanoke; nephew, Bobby Smith, Roanoke; twenty-one grandchildren; forty-four great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; a host of other relatives and friends and all the children she cared for in the northeast neighborhood where she lived for many years. MATHIS, Talmage DWain Sr., (``Matt'' or ``Tammy''), 68, of Roanoke, died Wednesday, August 16, 1995, at Community Hospital. He was born in Fullerton/ Crowley, La. He was a retired First Sergeant (Specia l Forces US Army), serving in World War II, The Korean Conflict, and three tours in Vietnam. He was the receiptant of five Purple Hearts, was a police officer for Virginia Western Community College, member of the VFW, I.O.O.F., Fraternal Order of Police, the NRA, Izaak Walton Conservation League and North Shore Animal League. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harvey Henderson Mathis and Helen Maddox; also a half brother, Pug Brister. Survived is his loving and devoted wife, Karen Onaitis Mathis; sons, Gerd Fischer, Germany, Talmage DWain Mathis Jr. and wife, Jannie, Ironto, Harvey Walter Mathis and wife, Anna, Germany, Tommy (Thomas) David Mathis and wife, Myra; daughter, Jeanne Schmidt, Germany, Pam Bishop and husband Bob, Roanoke; his stepchildren, Mary Anne Klee and husband, James, Julia Morton and husband, John, William T. WHITTINGTON, William, Jr., (``Chucky"" ``Billy"") 55, of R oanoke, passed away Wednesday, August 16, 1995. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Whittington Sr. and Frances White Whittington. Billy, as he was affectionately called, served his country in the U. S. Air Force. Survivors include three daughters, Katherine Whittington, Pier Williams, and Charmine Whittington, all of Roanoke; two brothers, John (Carolyn) Whittington and Marvin (Delmar) Whittington; three sisters, Loretta W. Jones, Juanita W. Taylor, and Danise J. Whittington, all of Roanoke; three grandchildren, Danielle Whittington, Antonio Whittington, both of Roanoke, and Ami'Chia Williams, Vinton.; a close friend, Mearl Hairston, Roanoke; four aunts, a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Va. on November 20, 1910 and was the daughter of the late Charles William and Lelia Gearheart Dunn. She was a former resident of Burkes Garden, Va. and Peterstown, W. Va. She was a retired employee of the Giles Memorial Hospital in Pearisburg, Va. and was a member and assistant director of the W. M. U. of the Glen Lyn Baptist Church in Glen Lyn, Va. She is survived by a son, Marcus M. (Buddy) Worrell, Peterstown, W. Va.; two stepsons, Ronald D. Worrell, Peterstown, W. Va., William B. Worrell, Rich Creek; a daughter, Betty Lynn Boling, Arlington, Texas; and a stepdaughter , Ruth Prosser, Loves Park, Ill; a sister, Edna Morgan, Ridgeland, S. C.; two granddaughters, Sherri W. Collins, Rich Creek and Misti Leigh Worrell, Peterstown, W. Va.; and a great-grandson, Tyler McKinley Collins, Rich Creek.
