ADAMS, Winston B., 54, of Roanoke County, passed away Thursday, August 24, 1995, at his residence. Winston was a life member of the Mount Pleasant Fire Department with 30 years service and the Mount Pleasant Rescue Squad with 17 years service. He was a photo engraver for the Roanoke Times with 36 years service and was preceded in death by his parents J. Kelly and Mary Meador Adams and a brother, Ray M. Adams. Surv iving are his wife, Jane Garman Adams; two sons, James W. (Jimmy) Adams, David W. Adams, both of Roanoke County; a sister and brother-in-law, Joyce and Richard A. Kidd, Vinton; a brother and sister-in-law, James L. and Sue Adams, Roanoke County; his father and mother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Wade Garman, Fincastle; his brothers-in-law, Roger W. Garman and his wife, Nancy, Princeton, W.Va., Richard W. Garman and his wife, Joanie, Roanoke; his sisters-in-law, Marie Aird and her husband, Jesse, Roanoke, Myrtle Simmons and her husband, Billy, Fincastle, Linda Bailey and her husband, Jim, Westchester, Ohio; several nieces and nephews including Susan, Michael and special niece, Ginny; his beloved pet, Freckles. Funeral services will be held at Oakey's Vinton Chapel Saturday, August 26, 1995, at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Mark Washington officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Burial Park. COX, Owen L. Sr., 73, of Saltville passed away at his home Thursday, August 24, 1995, to be with his Lord. He is survived by his wife, Catherine M. (Kitty) Cox; two sons, Owen L. Cox Jr., Chicago, Ill., and his friend, Barbara Woodward, and James F. Cox and his wife, Deborah N. Cox, Dublin; and three grandchildren, Allison, Emily and Mary Beth. He is also survived by two brothers, Dr. D. B. Cox and his wife, Frankie, Wytheville and W. Frank Cox and his wife, Nannie Lou, Sugar Grove; one sister, Betty C. Shipp, Fairfax; and four sisters-in-law, Frances Cox, Marion, Elsie Puckett, Myrtle Beach, S.C., Stella Davidson, La Grange, Ga., and Barbara Chapman, Roanoke; and two special family friends, Tom Carter, Saltville and Roger Poston, Sterling. He was a life-long member of the Democratic Party and was currently serving on the Smyth County Board of Supervisors and a member of the Detention Board Commission. He was a veteran of World War II, current member of the VFW, a former businessman of Saltville for twenty-three years, and developer of Pleasant Heights Sub-Division. He also was a former member of the Saltville/Rich Valley Lions Club, the Saltville Town Council, the Smyth County Public Service Authority and the Smyth County Social Service Department Board. He was currently a member of the Smyth County Chamber of Commerce and attended Madam Russell United Methodist Church. The funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, August 26, 1995, at Madam Russell United Methodist Church, with burial to follow in the Mount Rose Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. on August 25, at Madam Russell United Methodist Church or anytime at the home. ELLIOTT, Johnny Lee Sr. 61, of Stuarts Draft, went to be with the Lord, Wednesday, August 23, 1995, from his home. He was born in Radford, August 29, 1933 a son of Frank and Grace Shelton Elliott. He attended the Baptist Church. He was a member of the 82nd Airborne Unit, serving from March 1954 until February 28, 1962. He received the National Defense Award and Good Conduct Medal. He is survived by his wife, Wanda L. Elliott, Stuarts Draft; two sons and daughters-in-law, Johnny L. Elliott Jr. and wife, Debbie of Manassas, Robert L. Elliott and wife, Dawn of Stuarts Draft; one sister and brother-i n-law, Madelene Baker and husband, Burke of Radford; one brother and sister-in-law, James Elliott and wife Agnes of Dublin; two granddaughters, Jennifer Rose and Amanda Rene Elliott; also several nieces and nephews. THOMAS, Charles Benton, 45, of Rt. 3, Box 450-1, Staunton, died at 8:51 p.m. Wednesday, August 23, 1995 in the Augusta Medical Center, Fishersville. He was born on February 16, 1950, in Roanoke, a son of Floyd Benton Thomas of Fincastle and the late Mrs. Doris (Crowder) Thomas. Mr. Thomas was self-employed. He was a member of Fincastle Presbyterian Church, an Eagle Scout, and coached the Cardinals Baseball Team. In addition to his father, survivors include his wife, Mrs. Wilma (Armstrong) Thomas, who he married on April 3, 1971; two sons, Christopher Brian Thomas and Collin Blair Thomas, both of the home; a daughter, Miss Heather Virginia Thomas, of the home; a brother, Michael Lynn Thomas of Halifax; and a sister, Miss Anne Page Thomas of Roanoke. A service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Henry Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Donald L. Long. Burial will follow at 2:30 p.m. in the Goodwin Cemetery, Fincastle, with graveside rites by the Rev. Neil Dunnavant. WHIPPLE, Claudia F., of Harrisonburg, died Wednesday, August 23, 1995 at Rockingham Memorial Hospital, Harrisonburg. A daughter of the late Claude Cicero and Lucy Bidgood Fleming, she was born in Farmville, and was educated at Longwood College, Farmville, and Emory University, Atlanta, Ga. Mrs. Whipple was Librarian in the high schools of Crewe, Brownsburg, and Rockbridge. In 1985 she and her late husband moved from Fairfield to Sunnyside Retirement Community in Harrisonburg. Mrs. Whipple was a member of the New Providence Presbyterian Church, Raphine. She is survived by her daughter, Virginia Whipple Winfree, Lexington; a granddaughter, Ann Winfree Scott, Richmond; two grandsons, Peyton Brown Winfree IV,Vienna, and Carroll Be nnett Robinson, III, Wilmington, N.C. Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday in the New Providence Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Raphine, with the Rev. John Lewis officiating.
