More than 332,000 people in Virginia and nearly 14 million people in the country have diabetes, a disease that affects the body's ability to produce or respond properly to insulin, a hormone that allows blood sugar to enter cells and be used for energy. Diabetes can cause serious health problems, including blindness, kidney disease, heart disease, stroke and nerve damage in the legs and feet. Diabetes is the fourth-leading cause of death by disease in the United States. There is no cure.
Diabetes researchers say everyone knows someone with diabetes. About half of the people who have the disease don't know it.
The walkathon is expected to attract about 200 participants and raise about $10,000. It will be sponsored by Arnold's restaurant, Kool Country, the Homeplace, Wades Foods, Blue Ridge Cellular, and New River Valley Podiatry & Foot Surgery.
